Remember how to divide fractions?
Here's an anchor chart that shows you how to divide fractions using models. This is a great way to start your fractions unit using drawings and models.
How to divide a unit fraction by a whole number
ex. 1/3 ÷ 4
1) Draw 1 whole with three equal parts.
2) Shade 1/3.
3) Divide (partition) it by 4. Make 3 cuts to divide by 4.
4) Circle 1 part. The numerator is 1.
5) Count the total number of equal parts. There are 12 equal parts. The denominator is 12.
6) So, 1/3 ÷ 4 = 1/12
How to divide a whole number by a unit fraction
ex. 3 ÷ 1/2
1) Draw 3 wholes.
2) Divide (partition) each whole by 1/2. Make 1 cut to divide by 1/2.
3) Count the total number of halves. There are 6 halves.
4) So, 3 ÷ 1/2 = 6
